End of a successful tour of South America for the Argentine Sebastian Baez. In the final of the Chile Open 2025 he faced Serbian Laslo Djere who defeated him in a thrilling match by 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Baez closes his tour with a round of 16 defeat at home, trophy in Rio and runner-up in Santiago.
Laslo Djere and Seba Baez put on a great show in the final of the Chile Open 2025. The Serbian and the Argentinean had outstanding performances throughout the Latin American tour. In Djere's case, he came within a whisker of thwarting Joao Fonseca's dreams in the final of the Argentina Open. Baez, on the other hand, was the man to beat in Rio, and for the second consecutive year he won the title in Brazil.
The Serb started strongly by breaking the Argentinean's serve early and quickly took a 2-1 lead with his serve. That's when Baez's reaction came, as he put pressure on Djere and managed to regain the break. From that moment on things evened out, with neither of the rivals managing to take advantage.
In the ninth game Djere would strike again, breaking the Argentinean's serve and finally closing the set with his serve 6-4.
Although there was practically no difference in the game, Djere was able to take advantage of the break opportunities very well, converting 2 of 4. Baez, on the other hand, could only capitalize 1 break in four opportunities.
In the second set Baez played his best tennis, serving very well in his service games, reducing the errors and changing what had not come out in the first set. The Argentinean managed to break his opponent on one occasion, saving the only break opportunity to break his serve. After two opportunities to seal the set, Baez sealed the set 6-3 and sent things to the final set.
The final set was a clear reflection of a tight match, in which neither player seemed to be able to take a clear advantage and hold it. In the fifth game, Baez wasted a break chance that would end up costing him dearly. With the score 3-2 Djere came out determined to put pressure on the Argentinean's service game, breaking his serve.
Immediately after, Baez would come back to life and level things again by breaking the Serbian's serve. This would be the most tense moment in the match, and both players gave up their serves again for a total of four consecutive breaks.
Finally, the Rio Open champion would serve 5-6 to force a tiebreaker, but incredibly could not win a single point of the game, giving the victory in the final set to the Serb, 7-5;
Djere was crowned champion in Santiago de Chile, winning his third ATP title, the first in more than 5 years. Good sensations for Baez, who emerges as the most successful Argentinean on clay in the last 2 seasons.
