Nicolas Jarry shared a poignant reflection following his disappointing first-round loss at the Chile Open. The local hero entered the tournament as one of the biggest hopes for a home victory, but was unexpectedly beaten by Camilo Ugo Carabelli in an epic third-set tie-break.

The Chilean was leading 5-2 in the tie-break and squandered three match points before suffering a tough loss to the world No. 69. Jarry, who was the 2023 Chile Open champion, extends his poor run of form, with four defeats in his last five matches.

"I’m working harder than anyone

Since reaching the Italian Open final (where he lost to Alexander Zverev), Jarry has struggled and fallen dramatically in the rankings, now sitting at world No. 45, just nine months after reaching his career-high ranking of No. 16.

Local fans flooded social media with criticism, but this time, the South American star didn’t hold back and responded to his harshest critics. “I wish the result yesterday had been different, but it wasn’t. I guess that’s life sometimes, difficult. But I know that through difficulties is where you grow the most.”

Jarry won the Chile Open title in 2023, he defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the final.

“It’s not easy to return after being unable to compete for 6 months, but here I am, trusting the process and trying to regain my confidence,” added the 29-year-old. “A huge thanks to my team who supports me a lot and believes in me. Thanks to my family and everyone who supports me through the good and the bad.”

“I wish there were no tough times. I try to work and push myself harder than anyone, but sometimes, it’s the road we must learn from. To those who criticize, I hope you are as critical with yourselves and your children as you are with me,” Jarry posted on social media. “And to those who support me, THANK YOU! There’s still a lot ahead of me to prove. I’m disconnecting now to come back strong in Indian Wells.”

The Chilean must turn around his results if he wants to avoid a further drop in the rankings. Last year, he only reached the first round in Indian Wells, but in Miami, he defends quarter-final points, a challenging task given his current form.
