American star Peyton Stearns has been dealing with stomach problems caused by E. Coli, which have troubled her over the past couple of weeks. The world No. 43 had already faced issues last week at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, where she was forced to play two matches in a single day.
After overcoming three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur in the first round, Stearns took to the court on the morning of Wednesday, February 19, to face seventh seed Zheng Qinwen, rallying from a deficit to win 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.
Stearns began experiencing stomach pain after her victory over the Paris 2024 gold medalist, which almost led her to withdraw before her afternoon match. She couldn’t perform at the same level and was soundly defeated by eventual champion Mirra Andreeva 1-6, 1-6.
Nevertheless, Stearns made the effort to travel to Austria for the ATX Open Austin, though she was eliminated early by Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva 2-6, 3-6. After the loss, the 23-year-old American acknowledged that she had been struggling for several weeks but believes a few days of recovery will be enough to get her back in top shape for Indian Wells.
“These past three weeks have been a rough ride… constant stomach pain, exhaustion, trips to the bathroom, and not knowing what’s going on,” she posted on her social media. “After multiple tests, I finally found out E. coli was the culprit. It’s been frustrating not knowing what was wrong, but now that I do, I can focus on getting better. Luckily, I have some time to rest, recover, and get my strength back before Indian Wells! 🫶”

The 23-year-old has competed in Indian Wells twice before, reaching the second round on both occasions. This time, she seemed to be in a better position, especially after her first win over a top-10 player, Zheng. It remains to be seen if she can return to form in the coming weeks. For now, she appears on track to continue climbing the rankings.
