Sebastian Korda has undergone back surgery after spending four months away from competition, adding another setback to a career that has repeatedly been interrupted by physical problems. The American confirmed the procedure after conservative treatments failed to fully resolve the issue, with his latest injury setback arriving just as he had started rebuilding momentum following a promising beginning to the 2026 season.
The American enjoyed a positive start to the year after a difficult 2025 campaign affected by injuries. Korda captured the Delray Beach Open title and reached the final of the San Diego Challenger, quickly finding his rhythm again and posting a 12-6 record before another physical issue forced him away from competition.
The injury also interrupted what had been one of Korda’s strongest moments against elite opposition. His last appearance came at the Miami Open, where he produced a major upset by
defeating then-world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the third round before eventually falling to Martin Landaluce in the fourth round (after missing match point).
The latest procedure represents another challenge for the 59th-ranked player, who previously underwent
surgery in October 2024. With this being his second surgery in less than two years, Korda now faces another recovery process as he looks to return to the Tour and regain the consistency that has often been limited by injuries.
Korda confirms surgery after months managing back pain
Korda explained that he had spent the last four months trying to manage the issue before deciding that surgery was the best option. The American revealed that the back problem had caused significant discomfort, including pressure on his sciatic nerve, but said the procedure finally provided relief after months dealing with pain.
“It’s been 4 months off-court managing pain in my back with a lot of pressure on my sciatica,” ,” Korda
wrote on X. “After different treatments we decided to have a swift surgery that has finally relieved the pain. What a relief.”
The American also thanked the medical team responsible for the operation and confirmed that his immediate focus will be rehabilitation. “Massive thank you to Dr. Qureshi and his team. Now it is time to recover, heal and get back to work. Thanks everyone for the support. See ya’ll soon!” he added.
Korda had initially attempted to avoid surgery through different treatments, hoping to make a quicker return to competition. However, after several months away from the courts, the American and his team decided that a surgical procedure offered the best opportunity to properly address the problem.
Another recovery challenge for one of ATP’s most talented players
When healthy, Korda has consistently shown the level required to compete against the best players in the world. His victory over Alcaraz in Miami was another example of his potential, but maintaining physical availability has remained the biggest obstacle in his attempt to establish himself among the leading names on the ATP Tour.
The 25-year-old reached a career-high No. 15 ranking in 2024 and has long been considered one of the most naturally talented players of his generation. However, recurring injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress, preventing him from building the consistency needed to make a sustained push toward the top of the rankings.
Korda’s timeline for a return remains unclear, but the focus will now be on completing his rehabilitation and returning without the limitations that affected him during the first half of the season. After undergoing his second surgery in less than two years, the American will hope this latest procedure can finally provide a more stable foundation for the next stage of his career.
