Former world number one Serena
Williams will receive the Fashion Icon award at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards.
The 42-year-old is regarded as the
greatest player in the history of women’s singles tennis in the Open era,
having won as many as 23 Grand Slam titles.
According to a report, the Council
of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced on Wednesday that Serena will
receive an award in the upcoming Fashion Awards.
Chairman of the CFDA Thom Browne
commentated on the development and stated that the Atlanta-born is an inspiring
figure.
“Serena is one of the most
inspiring people in the world,” he said. “She is a true individual, an icon of
the sports world representing greatness on the highest level, bringing fashion
to another world, for another audience.
“Always staying true to herself,
both on and off the court. A perfect combination of our worlds, the ultimate
example of individuality in everything she does. Serena is a true fashion icon.”
Serena announced retirement from
the sport in September last year after dominating the women’s singles tennis
for more than a decade.
Her most successful competition
has been the Australian Open and Wimbledon where she ended up lifting the title
seven times each.
