Serbia’s legendary star Novak
Djokovic believes North America as a region deserves more tennis tournaments
because of their passion.
The 36-year-old is often regarded
as the greatest player in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era,
having won 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic was recently quoted in a
report where he stated that passion in North America is something else and
therefore, the region deserves more tournaments.
“Tournaments in South America, I
was just talking to Charlie (Carlos Gomes) & I hope we can do it. It's a
wish,” he said. “Of course, now the Grand Slams are my priority and maybe the
opportunity will come when I play those tournaments.
“Somehow the passion of people in
South America for sports, and therefore for tennis, is something that is unique
and I want to experience that week after week playing in those competitions.
Well, we'll see. Maybe in some distant future, since I have time, I'm young.”
The current world number has
recently won his 24th major title when he defeated the world number
three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final of the US Open in straight sets
with a score of 6–3, 7–6(7–5), 6–3.
With
that result, Djokovic ended up winning three Grand Slams out of four, and his only
defeat in the major tournament this year came in the final of Wimbledon where
he lost to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
