Daniil Medvedev continued his love affair with the
Shanghai Masters as he rekindled an old rivalry against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday in China.
Medvedev reached the Quarter-Finals of the Shanghai Masters for the fourth time in his past five appearances on Wednesday. He won the title in 2019 and took another step towards that with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Tsitsipas, improving to 11-5 in their long and storied rivalry.
Medvedev in particular was stunning on serve; he did not face a break point and kept the Greek ace at bay. He also targeted the backhand of Tsitsipas to great effect, committing a lot fewer unforced errors, also 10-18.
He becomes just the sixth man to reach the quarter-finals in Shanghai on at least four occasions. He has yet to drop a set and is boosting his ATP Finals hopes all the time. He is eighth in the race as of the time of writing.
“I love Shanghai as a city,” Medvedev said in his on-court interview. “It is one of my favourite stops on Tour, so trying to stay as long as possible. I am playing great. Today was a different game style than on the grandstand. But served great, with zero break points to face, so I am very happy about it.”
He now faces off against Tommy Paul. The American ace saw off Zizou Bergs, who was the conqueror of Carlos Alcaraz. He won in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. In the opening set, he survived a multitude of break points and sealed a 6-5 lead. It went to 6-6, but in the end, Paul managed to win the tie-break 7-5.
The second was a bit easier; he surged ahead, and despite Bergs hitting back, he managed to claim it 6-4. He went 4-0 up initially, and Bergs went 4-3 down. But Paul saved break points, and this proved to be huge as he went on to seal the first match point.
Elsewhere Rafa Jodar overcame a mid-match meltdown where he snapped at a ball kid to win against Botic van de Zandschulp. He beat the Dutchman 6-7, 6-4, and 6-2 and will now face Casper Ruud, who had a very easy time of it.
Felix Auger-Aliassime felt an injury and halted the match before the end of the first set, losing out 5-2 in the end as the Norwegian won through. So given the less time he spent on court, he will likely be the favourite for the final spot.
