Denis Shapovalov produced a brilliant effort to outplay and take down Alexander Zverev in straight sets in Melbourne.
Alexander Zverev was widely regarded as a player capable of winning this vent, especially with no Djokovi yet his charge was halted by the ever enigmatic Shapovalov. The Canadian oozes with talent yet that talent has never quite clicked yet with the closest thing to that coming at last year's Wimbledon event. The Canadian played his best match since then to oust Zverev in three.
It all started fairly early in the match where Zverev botched the first set in quite a weird way. The German applied quite a bit of pressure on Shapovalov and had break points but failed to convert them. He gave his opponent only one and it was converted sealing the first set. It was a very bad result for Zverev who serve very well in that set.
Things got progressively worse for the German as the match went on. The 2nd set was a bit messy by both but Zverev found himself with a great chance at 5-3 to win the 2nd set but once again he completely botched it allowing Shapovalov a way back into the set. The Canadian completed the comeback by winning the tiebreak 7-5.
In the final set it was all Shapovalov from the start as he took a 3-0 lead after which he closed out the set with 6-3. A very dissapointing result for Zverev who won only 6 of 21 2nd serve points. He also had only 3 aces to 8 double faults and it proved very costly for him.
