Australia’s
Nick Kyrgios has opened up about his cooking
skills ahead of the French Open. The 30-year-old was once regarded as the best
player in the country but has struggled in the recent past, largely because of fitness
concerns.
Kyrgios has recently featured in the Tennis Channel’s VIP Lounge
with the former world number one Garbine Muguruza where he talked about his
love for food and also shared details about his cooking skills.
“My mom’s Malaysian, so she’s a very good cook,” he said. “She
made me watch her in the kitchen when I was young, so I actually can cook a
little bit!” Kyrgios told former No. 1 Muguruza, when asked if there are any
dishes he can make on the spot. I’d probably make fried rice or noodles, that
stuff I can actually cook.”
Kyrgios also talked about how privileged he feels at times,
despite suffering a defeat in a match. “When you lose you feel pretty bad, but
then you realize our lives are very amazing, we travel the world,” he said. “So
you just try to remind yourself that we can go to a nice restaurant and enjoy
our time together.”
Kyrgios suffered a serios wrist injury in 2022 which ruled
him out of action for nearly two years. He returned to the court in last 2024 but
has not been able to play consistently at the highest level. After suffering a
defeat in the Australian Open first round this year, he hinted that he might
retire in the near future with consistent struggles.
"I went out there, I would say 65% of my
capacity,"
he said back in January. "For [the fans] to really see me
fighting and still giving me that energy, it meant a lot, because I feel like
I've given my life to tennis and I've tried to give them a show every time I go
out there. Realistically, I can't see myself playing a singles match here
again."
