Tennis remains one of the most popular sports in the world. That popularity has increased over the last few decades because of the rivalry of ‘Big Three’ featuring Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic, Spain’s 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal and former world number one and 20-time Grand Slam winner Switzerland’s Roger Federer.
With Federer already and Nadal set to retire after the end of the Davis Cup, the original ‘Big Three’ will no longer exit in the near future. That rivalry has now been replaced to some extent by the emergence of Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz. Both players are currently in action in Turin, Italy, during the ATP Finals.
The last major event in the men’s tennis calendar started on Sunday, where the top eight players are participating to secure the ultimate prize. On Sunday, the reigning world number Sinner faced Australia’s Alex de Minaur. The Italian, on his home soil, proved too hot to handle for his opponent as he secured a win in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4. As per the latest report, the match drew more viewing in Italy than an Italian Serie A blockbuster encounter between Inter Milan and Juventus.
The report stated that the match between Sinner and De Minaur drew more than 2.27 million viewers, whereas the match between Inter and Juventus drew 1.71 million viewers. Sinner, who finished the competition as the runner-up last year after losing to Djokovic in the final in straight sets, will be hoping to put on a better show this time around and go all the way to lift the title. He will next face America’s Taylor Fritz in the rematch of the US Open 2024 final. Both players faced each other in the grand finale of the fourth and final Grand Slam this year, where Sinner came out on top in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
