Jannik Sinner finally did it, he defeated
Vasek Pospisil in three sets and won his first ATP title at the
Sofia Open 2020.
It took him about two hours and 16 minutes to defeat Pospisil who played a great match especially as the match went on. The end result was 6-4 3-6 7-6(3) and it was a spectacular display from Sinner who kept attacking even when he wasn't hitting his shots. The opening set started off much better for Sinner who was in sync from the first point. In the opening game, Pospisil had to save several break points which he did. In his next service he couldn't so Sinner took the 2-1 lead. Vasek had a chance in the next game carving out a break point but Jannik saved it. From there it was a rather uneventful set where both started serving quite well and winning points with ease. Sinner maintained his lead and captured the opening set 6-4.
The player exchanged break early in the 2nd set before settling down to their regular play. The score remained tied at 2-2. Pospisil awaited patiently his chance and it came in the 2nd set when Sinner missed some shots and the Canadian took advantage of it breaking him and taking a 5-2 lead. In the end, it proved enough for Pospisil to win the 2nd set which he did with 6-3. It was a strong turnaround for Pospisil who improved in his game while Sinner dropped off quite considerably. The young Italian had early struggles in the final set as well where he had to save a couple of break points early.
Once he saved that he looked comfortable and kept attacking Pospisil at any time he could. The Canadian didn't back down either, he kept serving well and fended off all the attacks of Jannik. Ultimately the games quickly piled up and we found ourselves in the tiebreak. In it, Pospisil didn't play very well, especially when returning as he had trouble returning the serve. Several of those cheap errors cost him quick points and Sinner used his chances to win it 7-4.
This is the first ATP title for the young Italian but certainly, more will come. Congratulations. Be sure to check out our live scores page which you can find
