Italy’s young tennis star
Jannik Sinner has praised his
support staff after it was confirmed that he will finish the year as a number
one player in men’s tennis. The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the best
players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with
the likes of Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner is currently taking part in the
Shanghai Masters
where he has booked his place in the final after beating the Czech Republic’s Tomas
Machac in the last-four clash in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5. With
that win, the young Italian is set to finish 2024 as the world number one in
men’s tennis. Talking after the match, Sinner expressed satisfaction with his
performance in the contest. He further went on to praise his staff, who has helped
him achieve one of his ‘dreams’ to become the world number one in men’s tennis.
“It’s amazing,” he said. “It’s something you dream of when
you’re a kid, when you’re young. Just to reach the #1 spot now, but to have the
year-end.. it’s also a different and special feeling. But this happened during
the tournament. So I’m not even thinking about that. I know tomorrow will be an
important day… the final. But it means so much to me obviously. This is
something I could not accomplish without the people and family and friends I
have. Credit to my team.”
Sinner has been going through an impressive season where he won
two out of four Grand Slams. His most recent triumph in a major event came in
New York, where he lifted the US Open for the first time in his career after
beating America’s Taylor Fritz in the final in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Sinner will next face the winner of the clash between Fritz and
Djokovic in the final of the Shanghai Masters.
