Britain’s tennis star
Emma Raducanu has taken a dig at a
sponsor after it took away a major benefit. The 21-year-old was once regarded
as the next big thing in women’s tennis, especially when she won the US Open at
the age of just 18 three years.
The most impressive aspect of that win was the fact that Raducanu
won the title despite starting the competition in the qualifying round. She
went all the way and defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final in
straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
However, since then, not much has gone right for Raducanu as
she has consistently struggled with fitness concerns. The one-time Grand Slam
winner returned to the court earlier this year after a gap of nearly 12 months
because of an injury. This year, Raducanu has played 31 matches and won just 18
of them, suffering 13 defeats in the process.
After her success in 2022, Raducanu was signed by German
brand Porsche as a Brand Ambassador. Recently, a report was published in an English
media outlet, Daily Mail, where it was claimed that the player’s sponsor is
thinking of ending their partnership with the young tennis star and has decided
on some of the benefits away from her, including a car.
The news was outrightly rejected by the German brand who
issued a statement claiming that the Britain’s young tennis player remains the
brand ambassador and nothing has changed. “Emma Raducanu is a global brand
ambassador for Porsche and there have not been any changes within our
successful partnership since it started in 2022. We are very happy with our
partnership,” a spokesperson said. The former world number 10 posted a post on
her official account on the social media platform Instagram where she posted a
picture sitting in a Porsche car.
