For the first time EVER, someone has held John Isner to two or fewer games in a completed match 🤯 @janniksin triumphs 6-2 6-0 on his Davis Cup debut #DavisCupFinals #byRakuten
Even without Matteo Berrettini, Italy was able to bring together a very strong Davis Cup team that will try to win their group playing in front of native fans in Turin. Jannik Sinner returned to the Pala Alpitur and he was able to play a fantastic match against John Isner to give Italy the crucial point in the win over the United States of America.
John Isner is getting up there in age and the American can't really keep it with young and explosive players such as Sinner. The courts in Turin allowed Sinner to attack Isner very soon in rallies and the American was simply not able to move quick enough around the court to cover the distance. His own shots were not as sharp as Sinner and the Italian had a rather easy going.
He took an early break in the first set and continued applying pressure resulting in a double break lead for himself. He closed out the first set with 6-2 and it injected him with even more confidence going forward and it showed on the court. His play became even better as Isner slowly eroded more and more and Sinner continued cruising.
That resulted in a 2nd set bagel for the easy in only 64 minutes. Italy looks very formidable so far and today against America it was a great start for the Italian team.
