A very interesting Davis Cup tie is being played today with Italy taking on a very good USA squad and in the first match, it was Sonego who took down Opelka.
Both Italy and the United States of America arrived at the Davis Cup Finals with strong teams in the first round of the event they faced each other. The first match of the tie was played today between Lorenzo Sonego and Francis Tiafoe with the Italian proving a little bit better. The conditions were perfect for the type of tennis both players enjoy playing.
Opelka was able to hit his first serve at a higher rate in the first set yet that did not create a lot of advantage for him in rallies. Sonego was able to keep the ball in play rather longer and Opelka was not consistent enough to create a lot of damage as well. The American played very poorly on return and barely won any points. That was enough for the Italian to take the first set with 6-3.
Sonego mostly attacked Opelka on his 2nd serve and he was able to take advantage there winning 50 % of those points. He was also very clinical saving the only break point he allowed in the first set. The 2nd set was a brilliant set of tennis from both players as Sonego upped his serving quite a lot. The Italian was superb dropping only 3 points on serve in the whole set that went to the tiebreak.
Opelka was pretty good on his serve as well holding it until the tiebreak. The Italian had one break point but he was unable to convert it. In the tiebreak, it was Sonego once more who was better as he was all day in rallies. A solid effort from Opelka but not good enough today.
