The Davis Cup Finals quarterfinals began today and Croatia is up 1-0 against Italy after Borna Gojo defeated Lorenzo Sonego in a big upset win for Croatia.
Borna Gojo completed a major upset in the first Davis Cup Finals quarterfinal as the Croatian was able to defeat Lorenzo Sonego. The win is a very important one for Croatia who now only need one more to go to the semifinals. With Mektic and Pavic waiting in the final match it's a very good position for Croatia. Cilic is also playing Sinner so they might do it even sooner.
This match was a brilliant one from Gojo who is not used to this level of competition. That did not bother him early in the match as the Croatian played his game with a lot of confidence and Sonego found it very hard to counter it. In the first set tiebreak, it was Gojo who serve more consistently and won it with 7-2. Sonego countered with a strong set of his won in the 2nd.
Lifted by the Turin crowd who got more into the match, Sonego was able to play very good and consistent tennis resulting in an easy 6-2 win for Sonego. The Italian needed another strong set but one terrible game completely ruined it. Gojo went up 4-2 and in that game, Sonego had 3 break points but the Croatian was able to hold on.
Gojo then closed it out with 6-2 to complete the huge upset in Turin over Sonego.
