A very brief stay for Casper Ruud in Basel as he was beaten by native Stan Wawrinka easily in two sets 6-4 6-4.
The Swiss played some superb tennis a few weeks ago indoors and he certainly brought some of that form home to Switzerland. Ruud is a solid indoor player yet the Norwegian simply could not find a solution against a very solid Wawrinka who not only served great but bombarded away with his forehand and backhand.
The start of the match itself was comfortable for both players as neither faced any issues in holding their serve. It was 3-3 when we saw the first break point and it was converted immediately by Wawrinka. The Swiss played had to save a couple of break point in the next game but he did and held for the 5-3 lead.
It was the big chance Ruud wasted and from that point on, Wawrinka kept shining bright. First, he cruised to a 6-4 finish in the first set and then remained fairly solid in the second set. Ruud found a good rhythm serving well and holding his serve rather easily. Wawrinka did the same.
At 5-4 in the second set Wawrinka got a golden chance to win the match and he took it moving on to the second round.
