Coaching on every point should be allowed in tennis. The sport needs to embrace it. We’re probably one of the only global sports that doesn’t use coaching during the play. Make it legal. It's about time the sport takes a big step forward.
Coaching in tennis is a very controversial topic as it is not allowed after the match starts. Even so, there have been numerous instances in the ATP and WTA where players received warnings for 'coaching'. Those code violations usually result in fines and one such fine was paid by Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon.
It's not the first time Tsitsipas is paying that fine as his father and coach Apostolos is often accused of coaching mid-match. Another notable incident was the US Open where Serena Williams received a code violation for coaching which had huge implications later in the match.
Speaking out on the matter, Tsitsipas wrote on his official Twitter:
"Coaching on every point should be allowed in tennis. The sport needs to embrace it. We’re probably one of the only global sports that doesn’t use coaching during the play. Make it legal. It's about time the sport takes a big step forward."
Stefanos has a fair point in saying that tennis is one of the few sports that does not allow coaching but with a sport so deeply rooted in tradition in hard to see anything changing soon. Perhaps more professionals will speak out on the matter.
