Retired American tennis star John Isner has been chosen as the best server of all time on the ATP Tour, according to renown tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
The serve is arguably the most important shot in tennis, with momentum shifts during games depending on how well a player uses his serve. Mouratoglou, being one of the most well-known coaches in the tennis community, has vast experience and considerable knowledge on how to efficiently employ the serve as a weapon.
Isner leads list of best serves on Mouratoglou's list
With Mouratoglou having coached the likes of WTA legend Serena Williams, former World No.1 Simona Halep and even rising Danish star Holger Rune, the Frenchman could be said to be an authority on analyzing weapons required to be successful on the court. That being said, the 53-year old released a list of his top 5 players ever on the ATP tour, with Isner taking the top position. Although this choice could be seen as a surprise to some, the towering American was known for having one of the most difficult serves to return on the ATP tour.
Coming in second on the list was Australian Nick Kyrgios, who's serve could pose a threat to anyone when the former Wimbledon finalist was having a good day. Novak Djokovic' current coach, Goran Ivanisevic also made it to this select club of best servers. Below is Mouratoglou's complete list of top 5 servers in ATP history.
1. John Isner 2. Nick Kyrgios 3. Ivo Karlovic 4. Pete Sampras 5. Goran Ivanisevic
Growing up in a household where soccer was king, my earliest memories are filled with chants from packed stadiums and the rhythm of a ball being passed across neighborhood streets. But somewhere along the way, the quiet elegance and raw emotion of tennis pulled me in. What began as a curiosity became a lifelong passion; not just for the sport itself, but for the stories it tells: of grit, of heartbreak, of improbable comebacks and human resilience.
As a tennis writer, I bring the observational lens of someone who didn’t grow up in the sport, but fell in love with it as an outsider; a perspective that lets me see both its technical beauty and its emotional depth. Over the years working with TennisUpToDate, I’ve had the privilege of reaching more than 3.5 million readers worldwide, with one of my features ranking among the site’s top three articles.
With a background in storytelling and a creative mind always searching for meaning beyond the scoreboard, I aim to craft narratives that go deeper than results and rankings. Whether it’s a rising star breaking through or a veteran fighting off Father Time, I try to capture the heartbeat behind the headlines.
