Taylor Fritz wasn’t entirely optimistic after dealing with an abdominal injury that troubled him over the past few months. The world No. 4 made a successful Miami Open debut, defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 7-6, 6-3 to reach the Round of 32.
The third seed had already mentioned his abdominal issues a couple of months ago when he withdrew from the Acapulco Open in February. He revealed that his physical struggles began even before the Dallas Open and that he has been playing “despite them.”
Upon arriving at Indian Wells, Fritz said he would monitor how his body responded to the injury recovery, admitting it wasn’t fully healed. He managed consecutive wins over Matteo Gigante and 30th seed Alejandro Tabilo but fell in the fourth round to Jack Draper — the eventual tournament champion — in straight sets.
After beating Sonego in his Miami Open debut, the 2022 Indian Wells champion was asked about his injury recovery. The American admitted that he and his team are still assessing how he feels throughout the tournament week. When asked about his progress, Fritz said: “A lot better… a lot better. I think we’re gonna have to wait and see. I think the conditions I’m playing in are gonna dictate it. For now, I feel good, but definitely gonna have to see.”
The American No. 1 now faces his next challenge on Monday in the third round against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed. The pair have met ten times before, with ‘Shapo’ leading their head-to-head 6-4, including their latest clash at this year’s Dallas Open, where Shapovalov claimed a hard-fought victory 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(2)
