Taylor Fritz has won the Eastbourne International title for the third time in his career after a remarkable run on the South Coast as he joins Daria Kasatkina as the winners this week after defeating Max Purcell 6-4, 6-3.
Fritz is the first man to win the Eastbourne International three times. It is a seventh career title and a second of the year for the American who also cuts short Tommy Paul's reign of a week atop the US Number One. He will go back ahead next week.
Remarkably too, he wins the title without dropping a set. He wins the title without dropping his serve. He took the title on an overturned challenge which summed up his incredible week. This week in this run, he saw off Thiago Seyboth Wild, Juncheng Shang and Aleksandar Vukic. on his run. Basically all aside from the Purcell used a tiebreak as either both sets or at least one in maximum drama.
For Purcell, it is a superb week but Fritz who was the class of the field showed why. Winning the title in just over an hour, he broke after an underwhelming back and forth set at the last juncture claiming it 6-4 with a break at the right time. He didn't face a single break point in the tie as he broke to make it 4-2 before sealing it on the fourth match point.
Ironically given that Tommy Paul was due to play Eastbourne, his withdrawal didn't actually do him any favours when it came to this week as Fritz usurped him for that top spot. But given the golden summer that US Men's Tennis has gone through, it likely won't be the last time with the duo very much at the top of their game for a while and going into Wimbledon, it's in a great place.
