Up and running in Tokyo ✌️ @Taylor_Fritz97 finishes off a gritty 6-2 6-7 6-1 victory over James Duckworth for his first ever win at #RakutenOpen
Taylor Fritz did not cruise in his matchup with James Duckworth but he was still able to get the win 6-2 6-7(2) 6-1.
The match itself was the first one Fritz played this week in Tokyo and it was a solid one albeit with some poor choices in the second set finish. The American had a furious start smacking Duckworth easily 6-2 thanks to his deep returns and very aggressive play.
Serving well contributed a lot to that and he didn't even drop a single point behind his first serve (14/14). The second set was a very competitive one where Fritz fell behind 2-5 but battled back to make it 5-5. The Australian was in a much better rhythm in this one and Fritz simply wasn't that consistent.
He missed far more than before and it bit him badly in the tiebreak where Duckworth proved very calm. The Australian won it 7-2 to force a decider but he didn't play well in it. Fritz finally found his footing and proceeded to smash Duckworth 6-1 to move on. A good match from the American but one where his consistency issues once again surfaced.
