Team USA have put in another impressive performance and have topped the Group C in the Davis Cup. They defeated Germany 2-0 in the encounter on Saturday. In the first singles encounter, Reilly Opelka go the better of Henri Squire with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
The 27-year-old, who has struggled with fitness concerns over the last few years and missed action for a considerable period of time, was extremely dominant with his serve as he produced 33 aces, 15 more than his opponent. He committed just one double fault in the match, four less than Squire. Opelka produced 47 winners in the match in total, 15 more than the German player. He also converted one out of three break points.
In the second singles contest, Brandon Nakashima outclassed Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. With that result, Team USA also managed to secure the tie. The 23-year-old produced nine aces in the match, three more than his opponent. He converted three break points as well. In comparison, Marterer could not win a single break point. The primary difference between the players in the match was the discipline. Nakashima committed 17 unforced errors, 16 fewer than Marterer. In the second set, the German tennis player committed 18 unforced errors alone, 11 more than his rival.
The victory will be a major boost for the team USA as they managed to overcome two difficult opponents in the absence of some key players such as the runner-up of the recently concluded US Open Taylor Fritz, world number 13 Tommy Paul, 15th-ranked Sebastian Korda and US Open 2024 semifinalist Frances Tiafoe.
