Davis Cup after
another impressive performance. The team-based competition is moving towards
the business end where the remaining teams are battling to secure the ultimate prize.
Team USA have put in another impressive performance and have
topped the Group C in the Davis Cup. They defeated Germany 2-0 in the encounter
on Saturday. In the first singles encounter,
Reilly Opelka go the better of Henri
Squire with a score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.
The 27-year-old, who has struggled with fitness concerns
over the last few years and missed action for a considerable period of time,
was extremely dominant with his serve as he produced 33 aces, 15 more than his
opponent. He committed just one double fault in the match, four less than
Squire. Opelka produced 47 winners in the match in total, 15 more than the
German player. He also converted one out of three break points.
In the second singles contest,
Brandon Nakashima outclassed
Germany’s Maximilian Marterer in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-2. With that
result, Team USA also managed to secure the tie. The 23-year-old produced nine
aces in the match, three more than his opponent. He converted three break
points as well. In comparison, Marterer could not win a single break point. The
primary difference between the players in the match was the discipline. Nakashima
committed 17 unforced errors, 16 fewer than Marterer. In the second set, the
German tennis player committed 18 unforced errors alone, 11 more than his
rival.
The victory will be a major boost for the team USA as they
managed to overcome two difficult opponents in the absence of some key players
such as the runner-up of the recently concluded US Open Taylor Fritz, world number
13 Tommy Paul, 15th-ranked Sebastian Korda and US Open 2024 semifinalist
Frances Tiafoe.
