Nick
Kyrgios is notably absent from the entry list for the 2024
Australian Open, but
the possibility of his participation remains open, as he could potentially
receive a wild card. The Australian played only one match in 2023 at the
Stuttgart Open in June, where he fell to Wu Yibing (7-5, 6-3).
Despite
having a protected ranking of #31, which theoretically allows him to
participate in the tournament, the former Aussie Open doubles champion is not
listed in the entry list. However, the option of Kyrgios receiving a wild card
from the organizers is not ruled out, considering his status as a former
champion and a local player. This decision would depend on his availability and
readiness to compete.
Return to
the Court
Kyrgios had
an impressive 2022 season, highlighted by winning the ATP 500 Washington Open
and reaching the Wimbledon final, where he faced defeat against Novak Djokovic.
Unfortunately, injuries kept him out of competition in 2023. His return was
anticipated during the grass court swing, particularly for his favorite
tournament at SW19. However, he wasn't in optimal physical condition, and he
didn't participate in any other tournaments throughout the year.
While he
was confirmed to play in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Seoul from November 30
to December 3, a new injury forced him to withdraw, with Yoshito Nishioka
stepping in as his replacement.
Expectations
were high that Kyrgios would be fully recovered for the Australian swing in
early 2024. However, doubts have resurfaced with his name missing from the
entry list. Nevertheless, given Kyrgios' likable personality, it wouldn't be
surprising if he receives a wild card, provided he is in good physical
condition and has the desire to compete.
Up to this
point, Kyrgios' best result in his home tournament was reaching the
quarterfinals in 2015, becoming the first teenager to achieve this feat since
Andrei Cherkasov in 1990. During that memorable run, Kyrgios secured victories
against Federico Delbonis, Ivo Karlovic (23rd seed), Malek Jaziri, and Andrea
Seppi but was eventually eliminated in the quarterfinals by Andy Murray.
