Following his shocking first round loss at the 2025
Wimbledon Championships, Danish tennis star
Holger Rune was not very complimentary of his opponent, much to the delight of Aussie bad boy
Nick Kyrgios.
Seeded eighth at SW19, Rune faced
Nicolas Jarry in the opening round. The unseeded Chilean pulled off one of the earliest upsets of the tournament, rallying from two sets to love down to record a 4-6 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 victory to advance to the second round.
Kyrgios delighted at Rune's post-match comments
The Danish star was understandably upset after his loss, venting his frustrations during his post-match press conference. Rune claimed to be suffering from a knee injury, which led to him being unable to close out the match.
"In normal conditions, I’d beat him nine times out of ten, with all due respect to Nicolas Jarry," said the former World No.4. "Obviously, I didn’t have it easy today with my knee, but yes, it wasn’t a great match."
Kyrgios, who was recently booted from BBC's commentary coverage of the Wimbledon Championships, is currently doing analysis for TalkSport, another British media outlet. The former Wimbledon finalist claimed to be pleased with Rune's comments, branding them as cocky but adding he would probably have said something similar himself.
"My villain of the week is Holger [Rune]," said Kyrgios. "I just love that comment, straight away saying that he would beat [Nicolas] Jarry nine times out of ten.
“That is like the cockiest comment ever but I like it. That is something I would have said in my press conferences. That is why I do like Holger. I do like that, and that has stirred up the media a little bit."
