Nick
Kyrgios claimed that if he faced
John McEnroe in his prime, it would be an
'easy walk' for him to defeat him. The Australian appeared on Piers Morgan's
YouTube channel and commented that his serve would trouble the 7-time Grand
Slam champion, also highlighting the significant differences between that era
and modern tennis.
The
Australian is participating in
Wimbledon television broadcasts alongside the
American legend, making for a very interesting pair during the matches as they
analyse players.
Kyrgios discusses hypothetical match against McEnroe
According
to Kyrgios, if he faced McEnroe at his peak, he would not have much difficulty
overcoming the American: “That’s an easy walk for me. I think so… I’m serving
pretty big,” the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up said. “I mean, it’s a different era…
I mean, Federer, Nadal and Novak (Djokovic) have struggled. So, I don’t know
how McEnroe is going to go against returning my serve.”
The
former world No. 13 also opined that McEnroe, given his well-known explosive
personality, would have found it more difficult if he had played in the current
era amid the rise of social media: “He’s lucky that he didn’t play in this day
and age because I don’t know how that would have gone for the big fella,” added
Kyrgios. “He would have probably lashed out a little bit too much on people on
social media!”
There
is currently no clarity about a possible return of Kyrgios to the courts, and
it seems that even he is not sure about returning to the Tour, while he
highlighted that life outside of tennis excites him: “I’m at a crossroads in my
career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that
excites me,” said Kyrgios earlier this year.

“Of
course, there’s a part of me watching on that would love nothing more than to
be out there,” the Aussie said. “I know I can be one of the best in the world
and win major tournaments – if my body lets me. The fire still burns, but it’s
not my everything.”
