The 2021 Indian Wells is set to become the first edition of the event that won't feature any of Djokovic, Federer or Nadal in twenty-one years.
Novak Djokovic was initially supposed to play at the 2021 Indian Wells but just yesterday the Serbian announced that we won't be attending after all. He was widely expected to miss the event anyways so the decision did not come as a surprise to many. By withdrawing however he set up the 2021 edition to be a special one.
In the past 21 years, the Indian Wells event always had at least one of the 'Big Three' participating however that won't be the case in 2021. Djokovic declined participation as he is rebounding from his US Open loss. Nadal is recovering from injuries as is Roger Federer which leaves Daniil Medvedev as the top seed. It's a situation we already saw at the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters.
How will the event do withouth the big three remains to be seen but it's an extremely popular event among players due to the facilities as well as the fans who enjoy great tennis for years.
