Nick Kyrgios will be making his long-anticipated return to the tennis courts in January, as the Australian was granted a wildcard entry to compete at an ATP 250 event in Melbourne before participating at the
Australian Open.
Kyrgios has not played a match since the Laver Cup in September, citing rest and recuperation. However, the 26-year old says he has now spent a couple of months training in the gym and hitting with other Aussie players as he aims to return for a new stretch of Australian events.
"Obviously, I’m excited to play at home," Kyrgios told News Corp. "Tennis Australia has done a great job getting things together.
"Giving me a wild card is awesome—I’ll do my best to put on a show for the fans."
The former Top-15 player is known for his spectacular shot-making ability and on-court antics, but suffered a slump during the 2021 season that saw him drop to World No.93 in the rankings. Kyrgios reached the third round of this year's Australian Open, squandering a two-set lead before losing the match to third seed Dominic Thiem.
