"There are opportunities": Nick Kyrgios could win Grand Slams due to Big Four being "dismantled", says Wally Masur

With the Big Four no longer as dominant and Novak Djokovic approaching the end of his career, Nick Kyrgios could be the next in line to begin winning big titles, according to television commentator Wally Masur.
The former Australia Davis Cup captain believes Kyrgios could make a big comeback after recovering from injuries that have seen the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up sidelined, stating he could be the man to beat with Roger Federer retired, and Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray dealing with injuries.

“I honestly don’t know [what his plans are]. I’ve heard that he’s been training and doing rehab in Canberra,” stated Masur. “Roger has retired, Rafa is a little busted and Andy is playing with one hip, so the Big Four have been pretty much dismantled, although Novak is obviously still there, so there are opportunities [for Kyrgios to come back and win big events].
“I thought it might have been the next group of Taylor Fritz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, but Carlos Alcaraz has been the one who has busted through and emerged. Can Nick come back and play a part in all this? Absolutely, because anyone who serves like he does is always competitive. He might even have the best serve in the game right now.
“Can he do it? Yes, but it probably comes down to motivation and making sure his body doesn’t let him down. He’s pretty crucial for Australian and world tennis, so it would be good to have him back.”

- Yevgeny Kafelnikov's comment straddles two stools - the amount of games played, and the amount of money paid. They are intrinsically linked, but also separate. To isolate Iga for the amount she is paid is simply wrong - either all WTA players are paid too much or non, Iga has no control on the size of purse she earns for her performance. What Iga, and all the WTA players, have control (some!) over is how many events she enters. Emma Raducanu is opting out of some event qualifying (although the reason for her doing so is not clear) and has received significant flak for doing so, but this is a choice she has made. If we ever get to the stage when individuals are forced to play, then the concept of 'sport' is gone. Over the past few years the organization and amount of events in the WTA has altered, what needs to looked at very carefully is that those and future changes do not have negative impacts, not least on the players. And former players need to put more ice in their vodka!
