Carlos Alcaraz is hopeful for another showdown with Novak Djokovic after landing in the same section of the Miami Open draw. The World No. 3 spoke about his rivalry with the Serbian star and his desire to face him again, thrilling fans who eagerly anticipate matches between two of the biggest names on the ATP Tour.
Although Djokovic isn’t in his best form right now, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has repeatedly shown his ability to overcome adversity and rise once again as a great champion. They could potentially meet in the semi-finals, though the level Djokovic might show remains uncertain.
“We’re on the same side of the draw, hopefully we’ll both reach the semi-finals,” Alcaraz said during his first Miami Open press conference. “As I said before, these are the matches that attract tennis fans because I think every time we play, it’s fun to watch.”
Alcaraz also reflected on his role in inspiring tennis fans: “I’m very happy to be one of the players that leads people to start playing tennis and to want to watch tennis matches for the first time. That’s what I try to do, to have a style or a type of tennis that people like. I don’t just play for myself and for my people, I also play so that the fans are entertained. It makes me happy to be a player who contributes to tennis in that way.”
The Spaniard acknowledged that a potential clash with Djokovic is the kind of match fans look forward to at the biggest tournaments: “In the end, this is a Masters 1000. There are still too many rounds to be thinking about the semis. And from the second round, there are already matches that are really fun to watch and tough to play.”
Alcaraz knows that beating the best is part of winning these tournaments: “We’ll see what happens in the tournament. Of course, if you want to win the title, you have to beat the best players, like Djokovic. We’ll try and be in that position.”
Before any potential showdown with Djokovic, Alcaraz will first face David Goffin, a player who already caused an upset against him at the 2022 Astana Open, where the Spaniard was the top seed but lost in the first round.
“He’s playing great tennis at the moment. He played every point with a lot of quality. To me, the most important thing is that he’s grown physically,” Alcaraz remarked. “That’s key for his mind because now his confidence is even higher. In Indian Wells, he played great tennis. His mental level is good enough to play at the highest level throughout an entire match. I think that makes him a tough opponent.”
