Dominic Thiem got the job done in his 1st round matchup but his good display was cut short after Munar was forced to retire after only two sets played.

Dominic Thiem was cruising in his 1st round match against Jaume Munar Clar when the Spanish player was forced to retire due to injury. The match was a tough and exhausting one and by the time the 3rd set started they players were already two hours on the court. The first set was particulalry clsoe as Munar played well enough to force a tiebreak.
The tiebreak itself was a close affair as Thiem won it 8-6. Midway throught the second set you could see that Munar was struggling as his movement wasn't what it used to be and he was looking to shorten the points. That strategy got him more unforced erros and Thiem seized that opportunity to win the 2nd set with 6-3.
The 3rd set never got underway as Munar retired giving Thiem the victory which he would have earned anyway sparing him additional exertion in the process. We hope Munar will recover soon.
Two other matches finished at similar times as this one and it saw a huge dissapointment for the American fans as two American player's got eliminated from the tournament. Sumit Nagal eliminated Bradley Klahn with 6-1 6-3 3-6 6-1. With that victory he became the first Indian man to win a match at the US Open in 7 years. A more schocking defeat was that of Sam Querrey who lost to Kuznetsov in straight sets 6-4 7-6(2) 6-2.
