The men's US Open semifinals have been set, as Dominic Thiem completed the lineup following his quarterfinal victory on Wednesday night.
The third seed brushed past Australian
Alex De Minaur 6-1 6-2 6-4, as the two clashed in their much-anticipated bout on Arthur Ashe Stadium. A three-time Grand Slam finalist, Thiem is a huge favorite to win this year's US Open. The Austrian hit an astounding 43 winners past De Minaur, coupled with 11 aces. He played aggressively from the start, breaking his opponent thrice in the first set. The young Aussie was constantly under pressure, hitting 11 unforced errors to only two winners.
De Minaur did not fare much better in the second set, although he did mange to keep things even at 2-2. Nonetheless, Thiem ramped up his intensity, winning four consecutive games to close out the second set.
The final set saw the World No.3 acquire an early break, only to have De Minaur break back and gain a 4-3 lead. However, Thiem's superior talent was soon on full display, as he dictated play with powerful groundstrokes. He broke his younger opponent for the final time, before serving out the match after two hours and four minutes.
The
Australian Open runner-up now has a chance to reach his second consecutive Grand Slam final, after falling to
Novak Djokovic in February. Thiem will meet third seed
Daniil Medvedev in a mouth-watering semifinal, after the 2019 US Open runner-up defeated compatriot
Andrey Rublev in straight sets. Thiem hold's a 2-1 career lead over Medvedev, although the Russian won their most recent encounter at the 2019 ATP Montreal Masters event.
