Alexander Zverev shared his thoughts regarding the controversy surround Chinese player
Peng Shuai, stating that her case had brought to light the fact that there is still a lot of dictatorship going on around the world.
Shuai had disappeared after making sexual assault allegations against a retired Chinese Vice Premier, and recently resurfaced after calls her her safety became a global concern.
"We live in 2021 in Germany, and we think there is no such thing in the world anymore," Zverev said in an interview with ZDF sportstudio. "But of course this case shows that dictatorship is still the reality in this world. I hope she is well and safe and that she can play tennis soon."
The
WTA took a major stand against China as they suspended all tournaments scheduled to take place in China and Hong Kong next year. However, the ATP has taken no such steps and Zverev was asked if the ATP should follow the same course of action.
"I'm not a politician, I don't know exactly what's going on, but we all don't." responded the World No.3. "I hope that at some point more will come to light and then hopefully the ATP will say something and hopefully do something."
