Some of the round 1 matches of the US Open delivered thrilling matches with Thompson, Coria and Davidovich Fokina advancing to the 2nd round of the tournament. Jordan Thompson has been struggling to break through fully for quite some time now. He usually plays well at grand slams and that trend continued here.
His opponent was Italian Travaglia who can be a tricky player to beat on hard courts despite considering himself a clay court specialists. Thompson jumped out to an early lead which gave him confidence to play his game. Such a style of play suited him and he won the first two sets comfortably. His level dropped in the 3rd which he lost but he stepped it up in the 4th which he won 6-2. The end result was 6-3 6-4 4-6 6-2.
The first thriller match of the event was between Novak and Davidovich Fokina with the match ending after 5 sets. Novak started off better but as was the trend later on in the match there were a lot of momentum shifts in this one. After losing the 1st set the Spaniard started playing better winning the next two. His level fell of cliff in the 4th which he lost 1-6. But his opponent then fell of cliff which allowed Davidovich Fokina to win the last set with 6-0.
Federico Coria managed to outlast Jason Jung after he suffered an injury. He was up 2-0 and cruising in the 3rd when he suffered an injury. A medical timeout didn't help much and he lost the next two sets before retiring in the 5th. A truly heartbreaking development for Jung but tennis is somethimes like that. We hope for a quick recovery.
