Perhaps due to being overshadowed by compatriot Roger Federer, Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka is viewed as one of the most underrated Grand Slam champions in recent history.
The 3-time Major champion triumphed at the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and most recently, at the 2016
US Open. Outside of Great Britain's
Andy Murray, Wawrinka is the only man to win multiple Grand Slams in the "Big 3" era.
With
the US Open likely to be held this year, it's only appropriate to celebrate some of it's past champions. Wawrinka overcame stern challenges from Juan Martin del Potro and Kei Nishikori before facing World No.1
Novak Djokovic in the final.
In an amazing display of precision and power, Wawrinka upset the top seed 6-7(1) 6-4 7-5 6-3 to claim his third Grand Slam title. This was the only time in 2016 that Djokovic had won the first set, yet failed to win the match. Furthermore, he also denied Djokovic from claiming three Grand Slam victories in successive years (2015 and 2016).
