The Friday action at Delray Beach Open offered the remaining seven first-round encounters, with three Americans reaching the last 16 alongside Ivo Karlovic, who still runs strong on the verge of his 42nd birthday!
World no. 789 Christian Harrison secured the first ATP win since Newport 2018, beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 20 minutes. Harrison fired ten aces and saved two out of three break chances, mounting the pressure on the other side and delivering four breaks from 13 opportunities to control the scoreboard and advance into the last 16. The American opened a 4-0 advantage in the first set, lost serve once and closed it in game nine.
Christian delivered four commanding holds in set number two and grabbed breaks in games three and five to race over the finish line in style. Daniel Elahi Galan ousted Andrej Martin 6-4, 6-4, getting broken once and earning three return games to seal the deal in straight sets. Roberto Quiroz beat Noah Rubin 7-6, 6-3, wasting a 5-2 lead in the first set before taking the breaker 7-1. Quiroz served well in set number two and clinched two breaks that carried him over the top.
Bjorn Fratangelo needed 69 minutes to dismiss Kevin King 6-2, 6-2, dropping 14 points in eight service games and securing two breaks in each set to make a perfect start. Cameron Norrie proved too strong for JC Aragone, toppling the American 6-2, 6-1 in 67 minutes after playing well on both serve and return. Former champion Frances Tiafoe defeated Donald Young 6-3, 6-4, losing serve once and earning four breaks that carried him over the top.
The veteran Ivo Karlovic became the oldest winner of the ATP match since Jimmy Connors in 1995 following a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win over Pablo Andujar. Ivo fired 27 aces and broke the Spaniard thrice to advance into the second round.
