Rafael Nadal did not return to tennis with a win as the Spaniard lost to Tommy Paul in three sets collapsing towards the end 6-3 6-7(4) 1-6.
Tommy Paul is a very tricky player to play indoors as he is very aggressive and on his day can make it impossible to play. Today wasn't his best but he was pretty good overall with Nadal struggling to handle that on the somewhat faster Paris courts.
Paul opened with an early break indicating that this will be a very tough match for Nadal. The Spaniard managed to find a solution and took the opening set 6-3. He opened the second set with a break as well but gave it right back.
Paul slowly took control of the match applying heavy pressure with Nadal barely holding on. He collapsed in the tiebreak as the younger Paul outplayed him and took it 7-4. The final set was a disaster set by Nadal as he totally collapsed both physically and mentally.
He made a lot of bad choices in rallies and looked really winded which is not a surprise as this is his first competitive singles match since the US Open. Paul finished off the match 6-1.
