Former world number five Tommy Robredo bid farewell to tennis today in Barcelona with a loss in the final match of his career against Zapata Miralles.
The younger Spaniard came through the qualifiers and he was rewarded with the chance to play Robredo in what was his final match on the Tour. The older Robredo planned to retire from tennis last year but opted against it because he wanted to do it in front of full stands with family and friends in attendance. He pushed back his retirement to this year and wanted to do it in Barcelona.
Well, it was a very short match understandably because Robredo was not competing actively in tennis for a while. The former world number 5 bowed out against his countrymen 1-6 1-6 in front of a packed crowd in Barcelona. He retires as a 1x ATP 1000 Masters champion with 12 ATP tour titles, and 3 Davis Cup titles with Spain with over 100 weeks spent inside the top 10.
