Stefanos Tsitsipas won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title after a strong win over Andrey Rublev.
It was a great week for Tsitsipas who finished it with his maiden Masters 1000 title at the Monte-Carlo Masters. Winning it so close to where he calls home must feel great and Tsitsipas was very emotional during the trophy ceremony.
After the match he said:
“I had an unbelievable week in Monte-Carlo. I can’t describe my feelings right now. I am overwhelmed by so many different emotions and nostalgia. It is incredible that I am able to be in the position that I am."
It was a great display in the final from Tsitsipas who did not allow Rublev to play his famous aggressive game. The Greek controlled points and rallies very well forcing Rublev into tough shots that he would miss. It was not the best of displays from Rublev who was too erratic at times.
On the match itself Tsitsipas said:
“I knew that he was going to be a very difficult opponent to face. There were a lot of nerves coming into that match. [We] always want to bring the best out of [ourselves] when facing each other. Playing Andrey was a very difficult thing to do today, also considering that it was a final. [I am] definitely proud of the way I managed to behave and be out on the court today."
Recapping the win once more he said:
“The clay-court season couldn’t have started better. It is the best thing winning my first Masters 1000 and it is even more special doing it here on home soil in Monte-Carlo and doing it on clay, which is my favourite surface.”
