Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday, overcoming a spirited effort from Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
The World No.3 dropped a close first set before pulling off the 5-7 6-3 6-4 victory, securing his 47th match win of the season. Tsitsipas now leads the ATP Tour in match wins, and will compete in his fifth Masters 1000 quarterfinal of the season on Friday.
The second seed was rocked by a very aggressive assault from Sonego in the first set, as the Italian hit 15 winners from both sides of the court. With momentum on Sonego's side, Tsitsipas was forced to save three break points in his opening service game of the second set. However, he soon took control of the match, dictating play with his forehand and finishing well at the net.
The final set saw the Greek Star obtain an opening service break, with the French Open runner-up never looking back. After an exhausting two hours and 26 minutes, Tsitsipas sealed his victory as Sonego's return sailed long.
The reigning Monte-Carlo champion will take on the winner between Matteo Berrettini and Felix Auger-Aliassime, who are battling for the final quarterfinal spot.
