After losing the last five matches against
Jannik Sinner, the streak is finally over and
Daniil Medvedev is into the semi-finals of 2024
Wimbledon where he will face either Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul.
It concluded 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 in favour of Medvedev who after winning their first few clashes in their Head to Head slumped against him and couldn't buy a win. It all started at the China Open which birthed post puke Sinner when he was sick in a bin against Grigor Dimitrov then became an all conquering force.
He then defeated him in the Australian Open final after Medvedev went two sets up so this in their first Grand Slam meeting since is very much a semblance of revenge and opens the door for a big chance for Medvedev now.
The Italian took the first set narrowly before Medvedev levelled up at 1-1 with the second set going 4-6 the way of Medvedev. It was a tumultuous time for Sinner who nearly went the way of his girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya in having to retire from his tie. Sinner was visited by the physio at the changeover trailing 1-2 in the third set. Looking unwell, he had his pulse taken and then went off court for further assessment.
When he returned though, he couldn't find his magic as Medvedev won the third set also narrowly 7-6(4) to move to within a set of his second Wimbledon semi-final.
Albeit he did find something in the latter stages to send it to a final set and towards four hours. He romped past Medvedev 6-2 in order to put himself in position for a comeback.
But that wasn't to come as Medvedev took a vital break at 3-1 up and despite a back and forth game on Medvedev's serve, he never faced a break point for the rest of the clash and won on his first match point as Sinner had no answers. A tournament many expected him to win, it is in fact Medvedev who wins through. Now all eyes will be on Tommy Paul to see if he can win through to a real chance in an unheralded semi-final.
