Andy Murray and Felix Auger-Aliassime clashed at the Rotterdam Open with the Canadian winning the match but the end of the match featured a very odd sequence of events.
The third-seeded Auger-Aliassime produced an impressive display as he swept aside former world No 1 Murray 6-3, 6-4 in just over 90 minutes to book his place in the quarter-final of the ATP 500 event. At 5-4 and 40-15 in the second set and the Canadian serving at match point, things got a bit heated as Murray’s hat fell off midway through the point.
Auger-Aliassime thought he had hit a winner, but the three-time Grand Slam winner had stopped playing and wanted the point to replayed as he had suffered a hindrance. The duo went to the net to chat with the chair umpire and Murray told his opponent and the official: “I’m not trying to cheat. I hit the ball and my hat fell off immediately and I stopped.
“Felix I promise that’s what happened. I’m sorry.” said Murray to Auger-Aliassime. The point was replayed and Murray ended up winning it to reduce the deficit to 40-30, but Auger-Aliassime got the job done at the second (or third time) of asking.
