It was a return to the old playbook for Caroline Wozniacki on Sunday evening as she took down Mayar Sherif to reach the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The former World No.1 imitated the grunt of the Egyptian mid-point during her comeback win.
Wozniacki was 6-2, 5-4, 3-0 down against the Egyptian before coming back to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Sherif served for the match in the second set but Wozniacki was more tenacious and in her fourth Olympic Games continues to shine.
But the moment happened mid rally in which Sherif grunted and like a comedian with quick wit, Wozniacki was quick to return the favour in the same fashion as Sherif. She did it during two points and continued it when they fell silent after the rally.
A compilation was soon unearthed of Wozniacki imitating players grunts most infamously Niculescu last back in 2018 when she complained to the umpire about how she grunted. So this is the first iteration recorded since her comeback to court around this time last year.
Next up for Wozniacki is a player that given the drama in this match could also give her hassle. Danielle Collins is one to show her true feelings on court and no doubt will give it back if Wozniacki tries similar antics. Certainly one to watch for aggro and drama if that is your tennis cup of tea. But the clip unearthed is certainly one to end the day in hilarious fashion.
