Daniil Medvedev had a heated argument with the chair umpire during his first-round match against Stan Wawrinka at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. The indoor hard-court tournament featured a blockbuster first-round clash between the two former Grand Slam champions.

Wawrinka took control early in the first set, securing a break to go up 3-1. However, Medvedev responded by breaking twice in a row to lead 5-3. Yet, he failed to close out the set on serve, allowing “Stan the Man” to level the match once again.

Tensions ran high, especially after Medvedev wasted a set point at 5-4. At 6-5, he managed to hold serve but became embroiled in a heated dispute with the chair umpire after receiving a time violation warning.

“Why do you give me a time violation? Do you have some problem? She didn’t even get the ball to the ballgirl,” the 2021 US Open champion started. “Open your eyes! No, you don’t have eyes, man! You are so bad! I remember you with Karen Khachanov, I remember.”

“Do you remember you don’t have eyes, huh? Why did you give him a time violation? You had a problem? Absolutely right! Unbelievable…” Medvedev added, visibly irritated. “You’re looking for trouble, man. You have some problems, some actual deep problem. I didn’t talk to you, I didn’t say anything to you, and then you act like this. You have some problems, man.”

Despite the outburst, Medvedev returned to the court, and the set was decided in a dramatic tiebreak where neither player could hold serve consistently, with both wasting set points. Ultimately, the three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka edged out the set 7-6 [10-8] in a match that remains in progress.
