Daniil Medvedev announced the end of his collaboration with Gilles Simon upon his arrival at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. The former world No. 1 hired the Frenchman in 2024 to join his coaching team, and they first worked together at the Australian Open last year.

Over a year later, Medvedev decided to end their partnership, a period in which he did not win any titles and saw a decline in the second half of 2024. Medvedev had several early exits in the Masters 1000 tournaments and was eliminated in the Round Robin stage at the ATP Finals, results that fell below the Russian's expectations and his previous seasons' performances.

The early exit at the Australian Open seems to have marked the end of the relationship with Simon after Medvedev was eliminated in the second round by teenager Learner Tien, 3-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(8), 6-1, 6-7[7-10].

In Rotterdam, Medvedev will play his second tournament of the year, and upon his arrival, he announced that Simon would no longer be part of his team. "With Gilles, we decided to stop working together. Honestly, it was a very good experience, with lots of good things. But from now on, Gilles Cervara and I can move forward and work together."

"With Simon, it didn't work out exactly the way we wanted to, especially in terms of results. We didn’t win titles, Grand Slams, or anything like that, but I learned a lot of new things about tennis: I’m sure it’s going to help me in the future."

The Russian tennis player is preparing for his debut in Rotterdam, which will be his second tournament of the year. Medvedev won the title there in 2023, defeating none other than Jannik Sinner, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2. This time, he will debut against 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka on Monday night.
