Russia’s
Daniil Medvedev made an interesting demand from the
chair umpire during the ongoing
Monte-Carlo Masters. The 29-year-old started
his campaign with a hard-fought win over his fellow countryman Karen Khachanov
with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
In an interesting turn of events, Medvedev, after the match,
decided to stay on the court and asked the chair umpire to allow his physio to
attend him as he was struggling with severe cramps. The video was available on
the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter. The result is important for the one-time Grand Slam winner who is going through a lean
patch. He has not won a single ATP title in nearly two years. His last title was the Rome Masters back in 2023, where he defeated Denmark’s Holger Rune in the final in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 7-5.
His most recent appearance before the first-round encounter
at the ongoing ATP 1000 event was at the Miami Open, where he was knocked out
after losing in the first round to Spain’s Jaume Munar in straight sets with a
score of 6-2, 6-3. He is now set to face off France’s Alexandre Muller in the
round of 32, who cemented his spot in the second round of the competition after
beating Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli in straight sets with a score of 6-4,
6-4.
It will be the third meeting between the two players in professional
tennis. In the previous two meetings, Medvedev had a clear edge as he came out
on top on both occasions. Their last meeting was in the second round of
Wimbledon 2024, where the Russian tennis star came out on top with a score of
6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5.
