Daniil Medvedev's Monte-Carlo Masters was over before it even started with a humiliating 6-0, 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Matteo Berrettini. He was not a happy man on court, smashing his racket onto the floor and wall amid a torrid showing from the seventh seed.
Following consecutive finals in Dubai and Indian Wells, it seemed that the Russian had turned a corner and was back to his imperious best. This run included defeating a rampant Carlos Alcaraz in California enroute to losing to Jannik Sinner in the final. However, it seems that he is back to square one with consecutive defeats.
After an early exit at the Miami Open, the former world number one was hoping for a strong start to his clay swing. This fleeting hope turned to despair and misery in a hugely humiliating result. It is the first time in his career he has been double-bageled, and the first time he has failed to make it past the second round stage at Monte-Carlo since 2018.

Medvedev loses cool on court in humiliating showing

Funnily enough, this could have been completely different. Medevdev had two break point opportunities to edge himself in front. These efforts were both fought back by a motivated Italian who would sprint into a 2-0 lead. This changed to 4-0 after a second break of serve was clinically sealed. Medvedev was left floundering, unable to touch the imperious serve of the Italian while continuing to struggle to find any form or momentum.
In the space of 25 minutes, he was one set away from being dumped out of the tournament. Berrettini was not waiting around, holding to love before confirming a fourth consecutive game won against the Medvedev serve after the former US Open champion whacked the ball into the net.
Known for an occasional outburst on court, the fans in Monaco would witness Medvedev completely lose it. He threw his racket just below the wall at the baseline with some force. He pictured a disgruntled figure, seemingly trudging back to his chair before hammering his hapless racket onto the ground, obliterating it.

The third time saw it spin off in another direction. He went to pick it up before again launching it onto the clay surface three more times by his chair right in the gaze of the umpire. The crowd was having fun watching, cheering when the racket hit the deck. Six times was the charm in this case as Medvedev went to put his broken racket into the bin.
He would return to the court with a fresh piece of equipment, but that did not seem to do the trick either. Berrettini dropped just two points on serve in the second set, seeing it out without even dropping a game. That is 16 games on the spin Berrettini has played in Monte-Carlo, and all 16 going his way. This follows Roberto Bautista Agut's retirement when 4-0 down in yesterday's first round action.
He swiftly moves through in a tremendous display which will be overshadowed by the actions of Medvedev.
