Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard’s serve had a massive impact on a fan sitting in the arena during the ongoing
European Open. The mega-event
in Brussels is moving towards a conclusion with only four players remaining who
will be battling to secure the ultimate prize.
One of the players would be
Mpetshi Perricard, who cemented his spot in the last four after beating the top-seeded player from Italy,
Lorenzo Musetti, in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 7-6. In the 10th game
of the first set, Mpetshi Perricard’s serve, which was clocked at 223 KMPH,
broke the glass of a spectator sitting in the arena.
The incident, which was caught on camera, left the fan
smiling. The win was an important one for Mpetshi Perricard, who is now just two matches away from securing his first title in 2025. It will also be Mpetshi
Perricard’s third attempt to secure a place in the final of a competition this
year.
In both previous attempts, Mpetshi Perricard failed to
deliver the desired results. In the semifinal of the Brisbane International in
January, Mpetshi Perricard lost to America’s Reilly Opelka in straight sets with
a score of 6-3, 7-6. Later in August, Mpetshi Perricard lost in the semifinal of
the Winston-Salem Open to the Netherlands’ Botic Van De Zandschulp in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5.
Mpetshi Perricard’s opponent will be the Czech Republic’s
Jiri Lehecka. The 23-year-old cemented his spot in the semifinal of the competition after beating Benjamin Bonzi, who was forced to retire in the third set. The final score of the match was 6-7, 6-1, 4-1.
It will be the first-ever meeting between the two players
in professional tennis at the highest level. The two, however, have competed
previously in the semifinal of a Challenger event in Liberec back in 2022, where
Lehecka came out on top with a score of
6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
