Daniil Medvedev praised
Arthur Fils after their clash at the 2023
Vienna Open, predicting that the rising talent will become a top player in the years to come.
The World No. 3 faced 19-year-old Fils in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, where he defeated the French player in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. This came after Fils made it to the final of the European Open in Antwerp last week, finishing as runner-up to Alexander Bublik.
The young player got people talking about his potential earlier this year when he soared to a surprise victory at the Lyon Open, achieving his first ATP Tour-level title. Moreover, despite his recent defeat, Medvedev added to this praise after their clash.
Medvedev says Fils will be a "dangerous player" in years to come
"Arthur had just played in a final last week, he arrived with a lot of confidence," Medvedev said, "I know that he wants this top win and he’s going to get it one day, he is very young."
"Right now, maybe I see him as a much better player on clay courts, but look at what he did last week, an indoor hard court final. Typically, indoor hard courts are much faster than those played outdoors, the conditions make everything go a little faster, so Arthur will end up being a dangerous player on each of the surfaces," he continued.
Fils has seen a meteoric rise in the ATP Ranking this season, moving up from No. 251 to No. 38, and Medvedev predicted that the teenager would only continue to improve to the point that he would become a consistent Top 10 player.
"He is super young, he has made a tremendous leap in the ranking, young people like him end up reaching the top 10, sooner or later.
"His progression suggests that he will be up there for the next ten years, as long as nothing strange happens, you never know. He has great potential, so let's hope he can develop it," he added.
