Jannik Sinner had an encounter with the Royal Family after being crowned Wimbledon champion. The Italian avenged his rival Carlos Alcaraz and claimed his 4th Grand Slam title, breaking the Spaniard's 20-match winning streak at the All England Club.
Sinner was crowned the new Wimbledon champion and joined the All England Club as a member. At the awards ceremony, he received the Prince of Wales trophy. The Prince of Wales, along with his wife, the Princess of Wales, and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, enjoyed the match from the Royal Box, as they traditionally do every year.
Sinner became the first Italian in history to be Wimbledon champion and had the opportunity to spend time with the Royal Family after the match, where he spoke with young George, 11, and Charlotte, 10.
The four-time Grand Slam champion signed some gift balls for the young princes and later revealed in a press conference what he discussed with the heirs to the throne. “In the beginning, I didn't know what to say,” Sinner commented to reporters at Wimbledon. “It's difficult to understand, you know, how you can talk. I always try to talk very natural.”
“I asked the kids if they play tennis and asked them what kind of rackets they play with, these kind of things,” the Italian revealed. “It was amazing. I believe for us tennis players, it's so nice to have them watching us because it makes it even more special.”
“You see how much they care about tennis and the sport itself. It's very prestigious. I've been lucky to meet her and the whole family, and it was a very nice moment.”
For Sinner, the victory was especially emotional, as he acknowledged in the press conference. The Italian achieved his first title after a three-month suspension due to a controversial doping ban, and after successively falling in the finals of the Rome Open and the French Open.
“Even if I don't cry, it feels emotional because only me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off the court,” he said. “It has been everything except easy. We've tried to push every practice session, even if I was struggling at times mentally. Maybe even more in practice sessions because I feel like when I play the match, I can switch off and just play. I believe that this helped me a lot.”
